Tomorrow is the Dormition of the Theotokos!

Today is the rite of the Burial of the Mother of God, that the Lamentations are performed as part of the Vigil for the Feast. Tomorrow, early in the morning, we will commemorate the Dormition of our Mother. Today, the winding sheet (plashchinitsa, epitaphios) of the Theotokos is brought out from the Altar to the centre of the Church after ‘The Lord is God…’, with the Royal Doors opened but the lights not illumined. Placed in the centred of the Church in the tomb, it is censed three times round about, together with the iconostasis and the people, while the people light and hold candles. Here in Greece, today, all the bells of the Churches rang to call the faithful to the Holy services.

Tomorrow is the “Easter of the Summer”, as our pious grandmothers and grandfathers used to say. People from all corners of Greece, as well as many faithful from all around the world will visit our Lady of Tinos, an important church for the Orthodox faith to pay respect to the Holy Icon kept in this church that is miraculous. Some of the believers will be in Kefallonia, and will see and touch her Holy Snakes that are appearing only during her Feast, and then they leave. As we sing her lamentations, we will go closer to her wooden icon/figure, we’ll humble kiss her feet and we will leave a flower next to her with deep respect, love and many prayers. Together with the flowers, we will leave here all our problems and sorrows, and with tears in the eyes we will ask her to help us and intercede for us to her Son.

Also, in both Orthodox countries and in non-Orthodox countries, all Orthodox Christians honour the Holy Virgin with many beautiful ways with special traditions. All nations, brothers and sisters in Christ, will piously remember her Dormition.

Please pray for me, in order to love more His Holy Mother, to keep her always in my heart and ask for her prayers to our Lord. May she intercede always for every human soul in order, through her prayers, all of us to be saved!
