Never despair…

Never despair of God’s mercy. “From any sins and their connected diabolical temptation, pray with all your heart, with the hope that you will be pardoned! Knocking on the door of God’s mercy - and I will open! “

- St. John of Kronstadt

A river of tears

Do not accept any thoughts of pride suggested by Satan, but constantly criticize yourself, for that evil rascal has defiled us with disgraceful passions, so how can we be proud? We need weeping and a river of tears to wash away our filth and sores. Bear in mind the humility of the Crucified Lord: “Learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matt. 11:29) Only by achieving true humility shall we find true tranquility and peace in the tempestuous state of our soul.

– Elder Ephraim

We should open our eyes..

What do people do when their hands and faces are dirty? They turn on a tap and allow the water to clean away the stains. We should imitate them. Only, we should open two taps – our eyes, so that an abundance of tears of repentance pour out, which will wash out all the poisons of this futile world which have infected and dirtied our wretched souls.

- St. Anthimos of Chios

Now it’s time to weep

Now it’s time to weep and pray for the condition of today’s world.  We must pray that God may enlighten them to see the way of God, the way of truth and of righteousness.

- Papa-Dimitris Gagastathis

Let us fall down before His Tomb

Let us also fall down before His Tomb, my dear ones. Let us fall down with tears, saying: “Merciful Lord, we do not have the precious myrrh of the virtues with which to anoint Your all-pure body. We have nothing, although we, too, would like to bring You something that is good and precious. But accept these our tears, as You accepted the widow’s two mites. Accept this our worship, our nocturnal wakefulness, and our small prayer, that we may be found worthy of seeing Your glorious Resurrection.”

- Archimandrite Tikhon Agrikov

May 30, 2009: Bike shadows

An old man said, “Just as we carry our own shadow everywhere with us, so we ought also to have tears and compunction with us wherever we are.”

Simply beautiful…

From St. John Cassian

”… a Christian is quite certain to fall into the same sins which he condemns in another with merciless and inhuman severity, for ‘a stern king will fall into misfortunes,’ and ‘one who stops his ears so as not to hear the weak, shall himself cry, and there shall be none to hear him’ (Prov. 13:17; 21:13).”

(The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers: Second Series Vol. XI; Eerdmans pg. 419)

"Rejoice with them that do rejoice"

Raindrops on holly leaf

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with those who weep. That shows your pure heart. With those who are sick, join them. Cry with the sinners. With those who repent for their sins, rejoice. Be friends with everyone, but do not forget to concentrate on yourself. Do not examine anyone as if you are above them, nor scoff and insult people, even those who live very bad life. Spread your dress of affection and shelter the sinner.

-Elder Paisios
